SD Mesa’s Southern California diving champion Rios-Brady, Palomar shortstop McKenna share conference AOTW honors

San Diego Mesa College 1-Meter and 3-Meter diving champion Jon Rios-Brady and Palomar baseball shortstop Conor McKenna have been honored by the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference as its Men’s Athletes of the Week for their performance from Monday, April 9th through Sunday, April 15th.

Rios-Brady, a freshman Linguistics major from Poway High School, took home first place in both events over the weekend during the SoCal diving championships at El Camino College. Rios-Brady scored 279.70 points in the 3-Meter competition on Friday, winning the event by more than 30 points over the second-place finisher. He followed up with a first place off the 1-Meter board on Saturday, winning with a score of 285.55 which was 66 points better than the runner-up.

Rios-Brady outscored the Northern California champions in both events, also over the weekend, and will take the best scores in the California to the State Community College Swimming and Diving Championships on May 3-5 at De Anza College in Cupertino.

McKenna, Palomar’s sophomore shortstop out of Carlsbad High School, went 4-for-6, drove in 2 runs and scored 3 runs as the Comets came from behind in the bottom of the ninth inning to down visiting Los
Angeles Pierce 13-12 in a four-hour non-conference marathon on Saturday at Palomar Ballpark coach Buck Taylor’s squad’s only game during its conference bye week.

McKenna, also is playing spectacular defense for the Comets, is batting .419 on the season with a .469 on-base percentage and a .590 slugging percentage.
